Enjoying Ubuntu

I am enjoying using Ubuntu. I have never liked Mac OS before because I couldn’t get used to the differences between Mac and Windows, however i did always enjoy the fun feel that mac’s have always had, they always have seemed a more enjoyable experience. To me, Ubuntu Linux feels like all the fun of a mac, on a PC. It’s more colourful and interesting looking than MS Windows, and the applications that are widely available for it for free are a lot easier to find and install, as opposed to crawling the internet for a version of a program you heard was good, crossing your fingers hoping you aren’t downloading malware!

So far…so good! Now all I have to do is learn bash properly so I can get the most out of Linux!

Dell Streak Update

I thought it would be a good idea to give a short review of my Dell Streak after about 9 months with it. Yes, it is the biggest phone in the world, and if you are considering buying one, please be prepared for an audience of ‘WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?’. I have prepared a few jokes for situations like that to take the focus off the size of the phone…

“yes i had to get all of my pockets tailored to my knee’s for the arrival of my new phone”

In spite of this, I LOVE it, I would happily have an iPhone and might get one next year but I am very happy with Dell’s first attempt at a phone, the screen quality is great, flash is supported and it’s absolutely perfect for web browsing. I honestly believe that most people who try this phone for a few weeks will go back to iPhone and say “why’s it so small?”.

Thumbs up!

More Theft!

Isnt anyone in the business world noble anymore? Gone are the days of respecting other people’s property, now it seems you can dig up anyone else’s land as long as you can properly implement it into a business application that will make you enough money to cover the lawsuits. Failing metaphors aside, this comes as the recent row between Oracle and Google, with Oracle cliaming Google stole the Android OS from Oracle, well more that Google infringed patents of Sun’s Java, now Oracle’s Java.

Seems patents arent doing the job they intended to do.

Dinner with Obama

Not many people in the world have the pleasure of dining with the big dog himself, however CEO’s from Silicon Valley, and some other smart guys have had the pleasure this week of meeting and eating with President Barrack Obama. Obama was meeting to discuss economic strategies and who else to go to than the leaders of the future, Google, Oracle, Facebook & Apple CEO’s  who were all at attendance in California.

It won’t be long before 7omas.com CEO receives a presidential email asking for his attendance. (7omas.com is no longer registered to me as it was pointlessly hosting a ‘maintenance page’ while I thought of things to put on it! Nonetheless, the point has been made.)

Two wrongs are trying to make it right

Failing market leader Nokia, and Failing-at-everything-except-windows Microsoft have joined forces in an attempt to claim a share of the smartphone industry. In all honesty i cant see this making it anywhere, Microsoft are trying to jump into industries and technologies after everone else has been so successful, they created Zune, an iP0d rival that fell at the first. Bing, a search engine, really? I dont have any doubts that the guys at Google had a little bit of a chuckle when they heard about Bing.

Nokia however still maintain a large protion of the industry, (and have a great track record for manufacturing good quality hardware) and if developing their own smartphone softwae was not feasble then i guess Microsfot for them isnt a bad move, however they both face an uphill battle.

Zero Day

In the light of Microsoft announcing the massive vunrablilities that could be hitting IE users this week, the so called Zero Day must be scaring the crap out of the Microsoft employees, they surely are the last people on IE, and only because they have to be.

Yey for us on Firefox, however it is a little unfair for those people who only go on their computers to check their emails. The kind that believe that if their PC was broken, they would lose their email account along with their facebook and intenet banking. Those people have the pleasure of never hearing about this, as well as having to wait on Microsoft to release a patch!

Windows Shut

This week it appears that Microsoft sales for Windows are down, great news, I think the computer giant needs to reconsider its strategies towards the OS, as every release comes full of bugs, security holes and is received by us like getting handed a dirty nappy and telling you to put it in the bin, with care.

It would be great to see Microsoft incorporate a little bit of open source in the OS, let the coders in and let the malware generators out! In spite of this, this week Microsoft have also announced a hike in their sales of kinect, the most over-rated device on the planet today, i will be here in a few months announcing the fall of kinect!

Facebook, Phonebook, Address-Book…

Facebook recently reversed their decision to allow thrid party app developers automatic access to you and your friends’ home address and other private information. This idea was created by Facebook as part of their unofficial ‘Take over the internet’ scheme, with the thinking being that if these 3rd party developers had your info, it would make it easier to fill out forms online etc. Thankfully facebook have had a change of heart as we all knew it was going to be an identity theft parade!
